Banks Enter the Agentic AI Era

The banking industry is entering what analysts are calling the "agentic AI era," as major financial institutions move from pilot programmes to enterprise-wide deployment of autonomous artificial intelligence agents. The shift represents the most significant operational transformation in banking since the adoption of online banking in the early 2000s.

Goldman Sachs and Lloyds Lead the Charge

Goldman Sachs is developing autonomous agents to handle core trade accounting and client onboarding tasks, leveraging advanced AI models to process complex financial documentation and execute multi-step workflows with minimal human intervention. The bank's approach focuses on high-volume, rules-based operations where AI can deliver both speed and accuracy improvements.

Lloyds Banking Group has declared 2026 the year of "enterprise-wide deployment" for agentic AI across its financial services operations. The UK banking group is moving beyond isolated chatbots and copilot tools toward fully autonomous agents that can handle end-to-end customer service workflows, fraud detection, and regulatory compliance tasks.

The transition from AI assistants to AI agents represents a fundamental shift: banks are moving from tools that help employees work faster to systems that can independently execute complex financial processes.

Private Credit and Digital Finance Reshape the Landscape

Beyond AI, the banking sector is being reshaped by the rapid growth of private credit, which has now seized approximately 15% of global lending. This shift from traditional bank lending to alternative credit providers is changing how businesses — particularly mid-market firms — access capital, and is forcing traditional banks to reconsider their competitive positioning.

In Africa, financial firms are increasingly turning to stablecoins to hedge against currency risks. The adoption of dollar-pegged digital currencies offers businesses in high-inflation economies a practical tool for preserving purchasing power and facilitating cross-border trade without the friction of traditional foreign exchange markets.

Industry Convergence at Major Events

The autumn conference season is bringing the industry together to address these shifts. FinovateFall (September 9–11, New York), Sibos (September 28 – October 1, Miami), and Money20/20 USA (October 18–21, Las Vegas) are all focusing on agentic AI, cybersecurity, fraud prevention, cross-border payments, and the growing role of crypto and stablecoins in mainstream finance.

Banking sectors globally remained resilient through 2025, and years of tighter regulation are expected to continue supporting financial stability in 2026. However, bank lending is projected to remain subdued as higher interest rates and the growth of alternative lenders continue to constrain traditional credit expansion.
